Playing with a partner

I trekked off to Manly today with a friend for a teams poker tournament event. The event was $75 each plus $50 in add-ons and rebuys. Top prize was a week long all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas - a prize we both would have been delighted with.

Teams events are risky because you are not just playing for yourself, you are playing for two and you kinda do not want to be the person who busts the team.Whilst we have trust in each others play and teams events are a little risky, its fun to change it up a little.

We both started the tournament rather slowly. We were on our own for the first hour and lost roughly half or stacks. I was very fortunate to win the hand before the break with a flush and return my stack to a defensible level. My partner had done slightly better but neither of us felt we were in a great position.

After the break our stacks were combined and we completed our double add-ons. Teams swapped control after every blind period (20 minutes) and we treaded water for 3 or 4 levels. It felt like I was winning with bluffs and could not make my big hands work. Eventually, I managed to turn a straight when holding my favourite hand (72). My opponent had a straight also and went all in, which I had to call. His straight improved on the river and I was eliminated.

We ate at the overpriced bistro in the breeze outside away from the heat indoors and made the trek home. My partner was very forgiving and Vegas will have to remain on ice for the time being.
