The Sapphires

The Sapphires Is probably the most recognised Australian movie title of 2012. It cleaned up at the AACTA awards this week so I thought it was worthwhile dedicating a post to it. I did not know much about this movie except Chris O'Dowd was in it (from the IT Crowd TV series). Dad watched this and thought it was worth a watch.

The Sapphires!

Well, this will probably come as a surprise to you but I didn't like it. I'm not a fan of musicals and this one had far too much singing for my liking and I kept zoning off. I thin the idea of a group of Aboriginal women singing to the troops is probably a story that needed to be told, but I would have felt much more satisfied if my dad just told me that instead of talking me into watching the darn thing. There were obvious sub plots which were predictable and a lot of the same cliche's and stereotypes you would expect from an Aboriginal film.

If you are into musicals, by all means, give it a go, but otherwise, save your time. It is one I wont be watching again. The fact that it did so well at the AACTA's shows me how bad a year last year was for Australian film.
